ACT for Behavior Analysts offers a comprehensive guide to Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) aimed at behavior analysts. It explains how the intentional development of six key processes—values, committed action, acceptance, defusion, self-awareness, and present moment attention—fosters the psychological flexibility necessary to replace maladaptive behaviors in individuals with language. It divides its content into three parts: ACT’s history and foundations in behavior analysis, step-by-step practical application with individuals, organizations, and families, and ethical and research considerations. Written by experts, it promotes integrating ACT from the principles of behavioral analysis to expand its therapeutic scope.
Dixon, Hayes, and Belisle combine extensive experience in integrating ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) with behavior analysis. Mark R. Dixon is a clinical professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago and BCBA-D, specializing in verbal behavior, relational frame theory, and ACT in its applications for individuals with disabilities. Steven C. Hayes from the University of Nevada is the key figure in the development of ACT and relational frame theory, with numerous contributions to integrating psychological flexibility into applied behavior analysis. Lastly, Jordan Belisle, BCBA and professor at Missouri State University, specializes in verbal behavior and relational cognition, and applies ACT and relational frame theory in the context of autism and addiction interventions.
